Batman V Superman Drops It Like It’s Hot At The Box Office

Batman V Superman Box Office Wrap Up

Well the good news (For DCU) is that Batman V superman: Dawn Of Justice tops the box office in its second week, the bad news is that while it may have outperformed in it’s opening weekend, The premiere DCU franchise crashed hard. Every movie has a significant drop the second weekend, the industry average is right around 49%, that’s considered healthy. If you fall in the lower 40’s you’re going to have a good run, anything higher it gets a little concerning, but isn’t disastrous untill you hit 60%.

Batman V Superman second week decline was 68%. That is what the kids call stupid bad. The last comic book films to do this poorly in their second weekends were: Elektra in 2005, X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009, and Fantastic 4 in 2015.

Clearly curiosity and Warner Bros. marketing blitz led to a huge first weekend, but the negative reviews (29% in Rotten Tomatoes – see Neil’s Sunday Night Rant here) have clearly caught up with the Zach Snyder film. It’s also quite possible that the DC fans are calling bullshit on this movie as they certainly take their comics much more seriously than their Marvel brethren.

Even with an astronomical budget of $400 million (marketing included) Batman V Superman still is a success with $688 million earned globally.

Shouldn’t it be God Still Isn’t Dead?

Meanwhile, Zootopia has had a decent run in its five weeks in the box office with $275.9 domestically and $787.6 million worldwide, but as expected had to settle for second place with an estimated

$20 million, while My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 took third in its second week with $11.1 million.

Rounding out the top five were two faith-based films, God’s Not Dead 2, which opened in fourth with $8.1 million, and Miracles From Heaven, which took in $7.6 million in  Its third weekend, bringing its total to $46.8 million. God’s Not Dead 2 opened on about twice as many screens this go around but couldn’t surpass the $9.2 million the original made. Which is no big deal as these religious flicks cost about fifty bucks and a bible to make.. Box Office Totals
