Coming Soon Trailers!

Not sure what to watch this weekend? Well here at Deluxe Video we sift through all the trailers of the upcoming movies and tell you what to watch and what to avoid. Because we care about your time, loyal reader…and perhaps because nothing is as much fun as righteous anger when a trailer fails to deliver the goods!

Poltergeist

As with most reboots, I tend to have a skeptical eye, and this trailer doesn’t do anything to put my mind at ease. Sure it’s creepy enough and shot very well, but there isn’t anything fresh brought to the table that compels me to want to revisit this franchise. One of the most iconic movie moments was the creepy clown doll in the original Poltergeist, and it looks sorely misused here.

I do hold out some faith though:  Sam Rockwell is a tremendous actor, and Sam Raimi ( Evil Dead series) has a history of shooting very effective horror films. We will see if the new Poltergeist is truly a fresh re imagining or simply a modernized re-hash of the first film.

When to watch it: This Halloween on Netflix

 Tommorowland

From Director Brad Bird ( The Iron Giant, Incredibles, Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol) comes a giant ad placement for Disney’s theme park of the same name. Perhaps it worked for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise but I’m calling foul here.  The latest trailer plays well enough, as it has some great visual effects, but you get a great sense of the “hokiness” of this film (really, a bathtub rocket-ship?)

Yes, this film is geared towards children, and may work with the younger crowd, but today’s kids demand a bit more than another pairing of the wise cracking teen girl and the old curmudgeon duo. Marvel created it’s juggernaut franchises through great story telling, not just visual effects.  Perhaps Disney should take a look at their business model.

When to watch it: VOD while planning your Disney vacation.

Chocolate City

So this is where former R&B singers go to die.. Starring Vivica Fox, Ginuwine, Tyson Beckford and Robert Ri’Chard, Chocolate City is a heartwarming tale about a struggling college student looking to make ends meet. A chance encounter with the manager of a male strip club, Chocolate City, brings Michael wealth and the ire of an older stripper.  It’s a tale as old as time, I tell ya!

Fortunately this movie is a limited release, so many of you will be spared the atrocity that is this shitty Magic Mike clone.

When to watch it: When the Soultrain marathon just isn’t enough.
