Box Office Wrap Up – Audiences Love Deadpool
Move over Matrix Reloaded and Fifty Shades Of S*%t, a new R-Rated film has claimed the Box Office throne. Earning $135 million Deadpool easily surpassed Matrix Reloaded (91.8 Million) and Fifty Shades Of Grey (93 million) to be the highest grossed R rated opening of all time.
Sweet Baby Jesus!
Deadpool was bigger than most superhero hits not named The Avengers, The merc with a mouth earned more than any of the X-Men movies (Fox), Man of Steel (Warner Bros.),and Marvel’s Iron Man 2. That is a fairly significant feat considering that Deadpool is not a household name (untill now).
Why was Deadpool so succesful?
Fox played it safe with this film keeping the budget around $58 million, and embarked on a hysterical social media campaign. Ryan Reynolds has been an enigma since his debut on Van Wilder, the man is funny, dramatic and possess a wit few can match. However he has yet to achieve mainstream success. Untill now. Fox let him loose on their viral campaigns and Reynolds did not disappoint. Lampooning the previous Deadpool incarnation Reynolds/Fox primed us to get aboard the hype train that was Deadpool.
But Fox didn’t stop there..
Fox pimped Deadpool out to various sites for 12 days to increase exposure, and it worked. Fanboys and the general public were frothing at the mouth to see this film. Even myself, hardened movie critic, was refreshing my browser and updating my feedly app to catch-all the Deadpool goodness.
Here’s Guardians Of The Galaxy Director James Gunn take on Deadpools success:
“The film has a self-deprecating tone that’s riotous. It’s never been done before. It’s poking fun at Marvel. That label takes itself so seriously, can you imagine them making fun of themselves in a movie? They’d rather stab themselves.”
Take note Hollywood, people actually like originality.
Kung Fu Panda 3 showed that it still has legs in its third week at the Box Office coming in at second with $19.7 million, while the next two spots were taken by the other new wide releases – How To Be Single and Zoolander 2.
Rom-Com How To Be Single starring Dakota Johnson fared slightly better earning $18.8 million, while Zoolander 2 fell short of expectations with just $15.7 million.
