What’s New on VOD: Netflix August 2017.

Marvel’s The Denfender’s and Death Note are just some of the new originals out on Netflix this month.

What's New on VOD: Netflix August 2017.Netflix’s output of original content continues unabated this month.  While we tend to focus on the films the nascent studio is producing, fans are no doubt eagerly awaiting the raft of new original series due out in August:  The Defenders, Wet Hot American Summer, and Voltron being the most hyped.

While the films section of originals is mostly focused on documentaries and comedy specials, there are a few exciting picks to be found.  We’ve already highlighted Death Note for your attention, but August also has some science fiction well worth your time.

Netflix August 2017.

Original Films.

  • Maz Jobrani:  Immigrant (8/1)
  • Icarus (8/4)

  • Naked (8/11)
  • White Gold (8/11)
  • Brad Paisley’s Comedy Rodeo (8/15)
  • What Happened to Monday  (8/18)

  • Lynne Koplitz:  Hormonal Beast (8/22)
  • Death Note  (8/25)

  • Ryan Hamilton (8/29)

Our Pick:  What Happened to Monday.

What's New on VOD: Netflix August 2017.We already covered Death Note in our Most Anticipated List, so we’ll shine some light on something different this time around.  What Happened to Monday is a smart dystopian science fiction thriller where society has adopted a single child policy in order to combat the ravages of overpopulation.  Willem DaFoe is the father of seven identical baby girls, so he devises a scheme to keep them safe.  Each can only go out into the world on the day corresponding to their name.  Things seem to be going fine, until one day Monday goes missing.  Her sisters have to find her, because not only is she family, if she is found dead then none of them can ever go into the outside world again.

This project is loaded with talent.  I especially like Glenn Close as the villain, as she handled it so deftly in Netflix’s The Girl with All the Gifts.  I’m always rooting for Noomi Rapace (especially after they fridged her in Alien Covenant) and this role allows her to play seven personalities.  I’m a sucker for sci-fi, so this one gets the thumbs up for August.

Original Series.

    • Surviving Escobar – Season 1 (8/1)
    • Voltron:  Legendary Defender – Season 3 (8/4)

    • Atypical – Season 1 (8/11)

  • True and the Rainbow Kingdom – Season 1 (8/11)
  • Dinotrux – Season 5 (8/18)
  • Glitter Force Doki Doki – Season 1 (8/18)
  • Marvel’s The Defenders – Season 1 (8/18)

  • Disjointed: Part 1 (8/25)

Our Pick:  Marvel’s Defenders.

What's New on VOD: Netflix August 2017.
-So what do we call ourselves?
The Power Rangers?
-Taken.
The NY Rangers?
-Seriously?
The Mini-Avengers?
-Just stick to fighting ninjas, OK.

Four heroes with different powers and personal issues must all band together to save NYC from a shadowy organization that has targeted them and their families.

Easy pick.  With the exception of Iron Fist, the Marvel series on Netflix have been excellent.  With the addition of Sigourney Weaver as the main antagonist, I’m very excited for this premier season.  It looks like they’ve managed to blend the aesthetics and characters from each show into a cohesive story (though I suspect Daredevil is going to be the big cheese, as he’s got the bigger installed fan base.)  Give it a binge on August 18th.
