What’s New on VOD: Netflix December 2017.

Once again Netflix is stuffing our stockings with original content, and the classic movies coming to the service are mostly on the nice list.

Groot this and Groot that…I’ll show them a goddamn Groot…

While Netflix is probably hoping you’re excited for all of their end of year projects, social media seems to just care about a gun toting racoon and his baby tree friend.  This holiday season Netflix has 34 new originals, including Will Smith’s first exclusive streaming film for the service…and people are raving about how they got Guardians of the Galaxy 2.  Really?  That’s 34 brand spanking new products that you can’t get anywhere else, and you’re excited for a Marvel movie that you’ve seen a dozen times already?  Well, on the positive side it looks like Disney and Netflix have made nice for the time being.  Several Disney Christmas flix as well as Marvel’s space comedy are arriving this month in time for binge watching and spiked eggnog.

  • Dave Chappelle: Equanimity (12/31)

Our Picks:

Bright.

A jaded LA cop is partnered with an orc.  Yup, an orc.  In this world fantasy and reality live side by side, and the police still need to solve crimes.  So they got an orc.

This films by the team who brought you Suicide Squad has Will Smith blending aspects of his character from that film with his prolific buddy cop films.  The visuals look very much like Suicide Squad met Shadow of Mordor…in a good way.  I just have to say that it’s nice that the white guy has to wear all the blue face paint while the black guy gets to be the human half of the pair for a change.

Craig Ferguson: Tickle Fight.

I enjoyed Craig’s first comedy special for Netflix, I’m Here to Help.  While it wasn’t quite as strong as some of his past routines (needed more lip-sync numbers!) it was solid and I have every hope that he’ll deliver again on December 5th with a second stand-up comedy special.

Our Picks:

Dark: Season 1.

A German series that explores a recurring wave of fictional crimes that is equal parts macabre and mystical.

This series blends the nostalgia vibe of Stranger Things with the darker tone of Channel Zero, adding in its own sensibilities and scares.  I need something creepy to watch now that I’m caught up on Hannibal and Bryan Fuller is leaving American Gods, so this looks like a great fit.

La Casa De Papel: Season 1.

This Spanish language series is about a team of bank robbers planning the biggest heist in Spanish history.

You can’t even complain about subtitles in this series since the action and cinematography speak volumes.  This is a nice noir Christmas present I wasn’t prepared for, and you know what a sucker I am for heist movies.
