Despite the heavy marketing Will Ferrel’s  sequel to Anchorman can’t unseat Peter Jackson’s cash cow, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.

Anchorman still performed strongly earning 26.8 over the weekend .

The original Anchorman had earned 28.4, but could only muster up a measly 5.3m internationally. Anchorman 2 pulled down 13.4 internationally this past weekend due to the hype and awareness to the franchise.

The Hobbit: Peter Jackson’s quest for cash earned 31.5m falling behind the original’s pace. perhaps fans are less than enthused with the splitting of the story throughout 3 movies and are willing to wait until the home release instead of this long slow tease.

american hustle the hobbit and anchorman box office wrap upDavid O.  Russel’s American Hustle performed well at 19.8m, starring Christian Bale, a fictionalized account of the 1970’s Abscam scandal, looks to have some legs and may make itself relevant in the Oscar conversation receiving much critical praise.

Fox’s Walking With Dinosaurs  may as well be extinct earning 7.3m on an 85m budget, Jurassic Park it is not. Let’s face it, there isn’t much of a market for educational movies and it may be fine for walking with dinosaurs anchorman and the hobbit box office wrap upsmall children but after you hit puberty the interest in dinosaurs significantly decreases without some sort of interesting story. Admittedly it’s ambitious, but no one want’s to watch a room full of Jar Jar Binks for 90 minutes.

Particularly with Frozen owning the family market right now earning 19.2m good for a solid third place.

With one week left in the year it appears that the box office may squeak by last years 10.8 billion earnings (thank you Gravity) I’ll be interested to see the final dollar amounts with Imax this year versus 2012 totals next week.
