Box Office Wrap Up May 8-10, 2015
As a surprise to no one, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron was the top movie for the second week in a row. Although AOU declined 60%, that was still enough for second highest second-weekend ever, the first highest honors going to the original Avengers. Domestically the film has earned 312.9 million in ten days, tying The Dark Knight as the second fastest film to reach that tally. Globally, Age of Ultron has made a staggering 875 million, putting it in place to topple Furious 7 as the highest grossing film of the year.
Hot Pursuit was the only wide release this weekend, and the Reese Witherspoon comedy stalled out at the gates. Opening at 13 million, 5 million less than the studio projections, negative reviews and word of mouth killed any momentum for this film.
Rounding out the top 5 was Age of Adaline 5.6m, Furious 7 5.3m, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 at 5.1 million.
Next weekend should be much more interesting, with Ultron facing a pair of sequels such as Mad Max: Fury Road and Pitch Perfect 2.
