Box Office Wrap Up: WW84 Repeats at #1

Box Office Wrap Up: WW84 Repeats at #1

After the flurry of last weekend’s multiple releases, 2021 got off to a slower start.

The box office returned to it’s Covid-19 equilibrium. As we saw for the last three months of 2020, the trend was for the box office to jump up on weekend’s with a new wide release and calm back down the week after. With no wide releases scheduled till January 15th, I’d say we can expect the box to cool even further next weekend.

This Week in Box Office History.

The box office declined by 50% compared to last weekend, taking in just over 12 million dollars. While we continued to see four films take in over one million dollars in earnings, the decline of Wonder Woman 1984 at the top spot explained most of the loss.

*No data for January, 1981 box office totals are reported, so we’ll be looking at 1982 for the month.

Top Three Films.

Wonder Woman 1984 repeated in first place, becoming the first #1 movie of 2021. It declined by 67 percent, a rather hefty plunge, but not unexpected due to its presence on streaming. It has taken in 28.5 million dollars in domestic ticket sales so far, and just shy of 90 million dollars abroad.

The Croods continued to trend upwards, returning to second place with 2.2 million dollars in sales. It actually gained steam this weekend, growing 27 percent and adding new screens.

News of the World rounds out the top three, with 1.6 million dollars. The Tom Hanks feature also added screens, despite declining a modest 25 percent versus its premier last weekend.

Other Films.

The single new release, Shadow in the Clouds, fell outside the top ten. It landed at number 13 with just 40 thousand dollars in takes, but was only showing at 75 theaters. It will be interesting to see if it expands this weekend to capitalize on the lack of any big-name new releases.
