Disney’s live-action Aladdin and James Gunn’s twisted take on Superman hit theaters this week.

The summer season officially begins this Friday, and we kick it off with three new wide release films.  The biggest name is Disney’s Aladdin, which has been trying to wish its way out of the initial bad reactions to trailers and promotional material.  Earlier this year, Dumbo fell off of its pedestal and failed to stick the landing, prompting speculation that Disney’s aggressive schedule of three live-action remakes in the same year is misguided at best.

The home market finishes the month strong for Netflix subscribers.  Three of the five new releases hail from the streaming giant, including one of our picks for best new offering on Netflix for May, The Perfection.

A streetwise thief living on the streets of Agrabah stumbles upon a magic lamp.  Granted three wishes by the genie of the lamp (Will Smith), young Aladdin (Mena Massoud) hopes to win the heart of the princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott), but must overcome the schemes of the evil vizier, Jaffar.


A childless couple (Elizabeth Banks, David Denman) discover a baby boy crash-landed on the edge of their family farm.  What at first seems like the answer to their prayers turns sinister as the child begins to manifest super human powers.


Amy and Molly (Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein) are at the top of their class academically, but the bottom of the pile when it comes to popularity.  With just one day left in high school, they try to cram in four years of teenage fun.
