Coming Soon Trailers: Downhill, Sonic the Hedgehog.

After the drip, drip of releases in 2020, we get an avalanche of four new arrivals.

Four new wide releases hit theaters this weekend. That sounds like a bonanza after several weeks of one or two releases at a time. Unfortunately, the February doldrums mean all four are niche films or of…questionable…quality.

The sound of a silent scream.

On the home front, nine streaming titles queue up for rental. My money is the obligatory horror film featuring Cupid as a vengeful wraith. Love hurts, folks.

Wide Release.

Downhill.

A normal family get a rude awakening when a freak avalanche threatens to engulf their vacation resort, and the father (Will Ferrell) flees without his wife (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and children. While the snow passes by harmlessly, the damage is already done.

Fantasy Island.

A mysterious benefactor promises a group that his mysterious island will grant their deepest desires. Soon, those dreams turn to nightmares as they must work together to escape a deathtrap.

Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic the Hedgehog gets transported to small town America, where his speedy powers catch the attention of government scientist Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).

The Photograph.

Mae is aggrieved when her famous photographer mother passes away. She discovers an old photo in her lockbox, and re-examines her mother’s life and their fraught relationship. Along the way, she starts an unexpected romance with a young journalist.

Video on Demand.

Alien Outbreak.

Two cops attempt to solve a rash of bizarre deaths and psychotic behavior in their small, rural town. Then aliens arrive and quarantine the whole town.

In Full Bloom: Transcending Gender.

A behind-the-scenes documentary about the work of transgender and queer actors addressing gender through an original stage play.

Cupid.

A persecuted teen who dabbles in witchcraft summons the evil incarnation of Cupid to take revenge on her classmates.

To All the Boys: PS I Still Love You (Netflix).

Lara Jean and Peter go from impersonating a couple to becoming one after Lara Jean inadvertently mailed secret love letters to all her crushes. As they navigate their new romance, it turns out one more love letter recipient returns to Lara Jean’s life.

Sadistic Intentions.

A stoner and a prickly metal musician accept an invite from a mutal friend to visit his home, but the friend is nowhere to be seen. As they wait, the two antagonistic personalities clash.

Olympic Dreams.

A first-time Olympian meets a volunteer at the Athletes village and they form a bond. Behind this attachment is two similar struggles as each feels that their lives have peaked too early.

A Simple Wedding.

An Iranian-American woman with very traditional parents surprises her family by falling for a very unconventional partner.

VFW.

A veteran and his military buddies get caught up in horrific violence as a gang besiege their VFW hall, looking for a teen hiding in the building.

The Staggering Girl (Mubi.)

Having escaped the shadow of her famous artist mother, Francesca returns home when she learns her mother is going blind. There, she discovers the ghosts she fled still waiting for her.
