Coming Soon Trailers: Patch Town, Love and Mercy

Coming Soon Trailers!

Not sure what to watch this weekend? Well here at Deluxe Video we sift through all the trailers of the upcoming movies and tell you what to watch and what to avoid. Because we care about your time, loyal reader…and perhaps because nothing is as much fun as righteous anger when a trailer fails to deliver the goods!

This week I’m going to do something a little different and cover some of the lesser known releases that may have fallen through the cracks for this weekend. ” But what about Insidious 3 and Spy you say? Well you should just avoid those and go see Entourage. Don’t believe me? fine, We still have you covered with The Coming Thing (click the link, trust me it’s not what you think) a new feature where Neil and I tag team this months new releases full with synopsis, trailer, and comments… oh my!

Patch Town

In North American folklore the stork delivers babies, but in Russian folklore, babies are born in the cabbage patch. Inspired by the award-winning short film of the same name, Patch Town tells the story of Jon, whose story may be darker than it seems.  A demented Cabbage Patch Doll origin tale, I was totally expecting this to be some absurd cheesy sci-fi/horror flick I could poke fun at…

I was only partially right. I’m not going to poke fun at it.

The trailer embraces its absurdity and runs with it!  Over-the-top characters, a dark and oppressive tone, and levels of insanity so thick I thought for sure this had Terry Gilliam’s name on it, all make this film a contender for your attention.

When to see it: On VOD, don’t worry it won’t be a long wait.

Love & Mercy

In the 1960s, Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson struggles with emerging psychosis as he attempts to craft his avant-garde pop masterpiece. In the 1980s, he is a broken, confused man under the 24-hour watch of shady therapist Dr. Eugene Landy.

I was never a Beach Boy enthusiast or even a fan, and I most likely would have glossed over this one if I hadn’t seen the cast listing. John Cusack, Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti are all top-notch talents, so I figured it was worth two minutes and twenty-nine seconds of my time. It certainly was.  Performances were spot on (I know it’s just a trailer) but the story is pretty damned interesting! My only concern is that this is only Bill Pohland’s second film as director  and one of his writers did work on Dumb and Dumber…but at least it was the funnier first movie.

When to see it: If Entourage isn’t your cup of tea, go see it in the theatres.

Larry Gaye: Renegade Male Flight Attendant

A self-anointed ‘renegade’ male flight attendant must save the day when the airline he works for tries to eliminate flight attendants as a cost-cutting measure.

You see folks this is what happens when you pay money to see Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

When to see it: If you enjoyed the Blart series…but then again, if you enjoyed Blart, you probably aren’t reading this.
