The Oscars 2019: Staff Predictions.

The Oscars 2019: Staff Predictions.

Here’s our officials ballots from the staff at Deluxe Video Online for the 91st Academy Awards.

It’s the day of destiny:  time to pick our favorites (Favourites?) for the 2019 Oscars.  We’ve crammed the last month full of reviews for the nominees, so check out our collected reviews here.  When it comes down to picking, there’s always a battle between head and heart.  When I look at it, I’m usually torn between three strategies:

  1. The Idealistic Pick:  Simple enough – just pick the contender you liked best from personal experience.
  2. The Logical Pick:  Base your pick on trend lines, market data, past voting history for winners, and how the other awards shows voted.
  3. The Cynical Pick:  Base your pick on insider gossip, Vegas betting lines, the known biases of the Academy, and the tendency for Hollywood to incestuously reward the person and not the performance.

Example of #3: Picking Glenn Close when nobody on planet Earth has seen that damn movie.

Most years I pick with my heart.  Most years I also lose the betting pool.  This year I’m going analytical and using box office trends, historical precedent, and letting my personal opinion smooth over any ties.  For those who want in on the action, post your picks for the scored categories in the comments.  Maybe this year we’ll get the ultimate upset and a reader will run the board!
