What's New on Amazon Prime: December 2020.

Amazon unleashes another tidal wave of TV and movies in time for Christmas.

Amazon has certainly stepped their game up since the start of the year. Instead of a trickle of new content, we get a flood of classic TV series and movies to start of each month, and an improved selection of Prime originals to keep your interest going strong.

New and Notable

Sound of Metal (Dec. 4)

During a series of adrenaline-fueled one-night gigs, itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career — and with it his life — is over. His bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) checks the recovering heroin addict into a secluded sober house for the deaf in hopes it will prevent a relapse and help him learn to adapt to his new situation. But after being welcomed into a community that accepts him just as he is, Ruben has to choose between his equilibrium and the drive to reclaim the life he once knew.

A solid cast with an anything-but-standard take on the genre, Sound of Metal could be worth catching on tour.

The Wilds (Dec. 11)

A group of teen girls from different backgrounds must fight for survival after a plane crash strands them on a deserted island. The castaways both clash and bond as they learn more about each other, the secrets they keep, and the traumas they’ve all endured. There’s just one twist to this thrilling drama… these girls did not end up on this island by accident.

While this reads like LOST for the teen set, the trailer shows some strong performances and unique angles.

The Expanse, Season 5 (Dec. 16)

The future of The Belt has begun as Marco Inaros wages Armageddon against the Inner planets for a lifetime of oppression and injustice.

Fans of the books know that this story arc begins the series’ mad dash to the big climax. Being the penultimate season, they’re going to have to cram in a lot of intrigue and big action set-pieces. Buckle up.
