What’s New on Amazon Prime: February 2021

What's New on Amazon Prime: February 2021

Amazon offers some genre fare films to round out a ton of new series.

Prime doesn’t look to be re-inventing the wheel with its originals in February, so much as trying to put spins on well-worn genres. The strategy is likely to be hit and miss, but Amazon should be able to weather the storm with the ton of new television series premiers it is dropping in time for Valentine’s Day.

New and Notable

  • Bliss (Feb. 5)

An unfulfilled man (Owen Wilson) and a mysterious woman (Salma Hayek) believe they are living in a simulated reality, but when their newfound ‘Bliss’ world begins to bleed into the ‘ugly’ world they must decide what’s real and where they truly belong.

The premise may be getting a bit cliched by now, but I haven’t seen Owen Wilson in a hot minute, and the bitter-sweet tone here is perfect for his talents. Oh, and Selma Hayek kicks ass. So there’s that.

  • The Map of Tiny, Perfect Things (Feb. 12)

The Map of Tiny Perfect Things tells the story of quick-witted teen Mark, contentedly living the same day in an endless loop whose world is turned upside-down when he meets mysterious Margaret also stuck in the time loop. Mark and Margaret form a magnetic partnership, setting out to find all the tiny things that make that one day perfect. What follows is a love story with a fantastical twist, as the two struggle to figure out how – and whether – to escape their never-ending day.

Amazon does know that Hulu released essentially the same concept with Palm Springs last year, right? Oh well, this will either be another time loop movie that surprises with new material, or perhaps the final nail we need to maybe chill out with time loop movies for a while.

  • The Boarding School: Las Cumbres: S1 (Feb. 19)

Las Cumbres is a boarding school isolated from the world surrounded by countryside. The students are rebellious and troublesome kids who live under the strict and severe discipline imposed by the center that prepares them for reintegration into society. The surrounding forest is home to ancient legends, threats that are still in force and that will immerse them in fast-paced and terrifying adventures.

Amazon follows Netflix in bolstering their foreign language offerings, and luckily their pick this month looks solid. Creepy imagery and a nice cast of misfits, The Boarding School might get right what New Mutants missed.
