What's New on Amazon Prime: January 2021.

Amazon brings two of their critically acclaimed dramas to home market in January.

Prime enters the new year matching Hulu when it comes to their line-up of recent releases and classic movies. In fact, the list is largely identical. The big difference is that Amazon drops two original films, Herself and One Night in Miami, that are likely to get nods during the upcoming awards season.

New and Notable

  • Herself (January 8)

Single-mother Sandra (Clare Dunne) escapes her abusive partner with her two young children, only to find herself trapped in temporary accommodation. After months of struggling, she draws inspiration from one of her daughter’s bedtime stories and hits upon the idea of self-building an affordable home.

I don’t know if you can call a battered woman trying to overcome systemic injustice a “feel good” project, but it certainly aims to uplift and features a riveting performance from Dunne.

  • One Night in Miami (January 15)

Regina King’s directorial debut of One Night in Miami: What happens when Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke find themselves in the same room.

Regina King brings together a strong cast with electric material.

  • Flack, Season 1 (January 22)

Academy Award winner Anna Paquin plays Robyn, an American publicist living in London who is an expert in her craft but a complete self-saboteur when it comes to her personal life. Robyn’s work as a crisis PR strategist is fast-paced and unpredictable as she counsels ill-behaved high-profile clients in a world where problems can go viral in an instant.

It’s nice seeing Anna Paquin getting a role she can sink her teeth into. Paired with a gonzo-journalism feel to the camera work and a menagerie of screwed up celebrities, this looks like fun.
