What's New on Amazon Prime: November 2020.

Amazon continues to invest in new and classic TV series for November.

While Prime does feature it’s share of Christmas specials this month, the main course seems to be home cooking. The start of the month is loaded up with classic movies and TV series, with an impressive variety.

Amazon adds just one new original film, but it offsets this two ways. First, there are a ton of recent theatrical releases hitting streaming services for the first time. Second, there are about a half dozen Prime original TV series, including our favorite niche, anthology series.

New and Notable

  • Alex Rider Season 1 (Nov. 13)

When Alex Rider learns that his Uncle Ian was killed in the line of duty as a British spy – and not a car accident like he’s been told – everything changes for this otherwise normal teen. Alex is soon approached by Alan Blunt, head of a top-secret offshoot of MI6 known as The Department, who reveals that he’s been unknowingly trained since childhood for the dangerous world of espionage.

Teen becomes a spy is not the freshest genre, but it’s usually played for laughs. Even the action heavy Kingsman series has a tongue-in-cheek level of camp. Alex Rider feels like Mission Impossible: The Teenage Years…in a good way.

  • Small Axe (Nov. 20)

“If you are the big tree, we are the small axe.” -Jamaican proverb. Small Axe is a collection of five films inspired by real-life events about ordinary people showing courage, belief, and resilience to overcome injustice and achieve something transformative in their West Indian community.

This solid anthology of films is Oscar winning director Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave, Widows) first foray into the “small screen” and I don’t doubt this project will get some Academy loving as well.

  • Uncle Frank (Nov. 24)

In 1973, teen-aged Beth Bledsoe leaves her rural Southern hometown to study at New York University where her beloved Uncle Frank is a revered literature professor. She soon discovers that Frank is gay, and living with his longtime partner Walid “Wally” Nadeem — an arrangement that he has kept secret for years.

After the sudden death of Frank’s father — Beth’s grandfather — Frank is forced to reluctantly return home for the funeral with Beth in tow, and to finally face a long-buried trauma that he has spent his entire adult life running away from.

Looks like a solid coming of age drama with a great cast, featuring stars Sophia Lillis (IT, Gretel and Hansel) and Paul Bettany (Age of Ultron, WandaVision).
