What's New on Hulu: September 2020.

Hulu makes a big splash with original series and a solid roster of classics.

Hulu wobbled a little through the summer, but fall seems to be their time to shine. There are a ton of favorite movies, ranging from classics to guilty pleasures, hitting the service early in the month. To follow that up, Hulu drops seasons of two excellent shows and quite a few new to streaming premiers of limited release offerings. I’m keeping my eye on the new drama, Woke, as it looks to be one of those “finger on the pulse” series that could make big waves.

New and Notable.

  • Woke, Season 1 (Sep. 9) – Yeah. This series could not be more topical and more timely. I think Hulu’s going to generate a lot of conversation with this series.

Keef, An African-American Cartoonist finally on the verge of mainstream success when an unexpected incident changes everything. Keef must now navigate the new voices and ideas that confront and challenge him, all without setting aflame everything he’s already built.

  • Pen15, Season 2 (Sep. 18) – I didn’t get a chance to sit down for a deep dive of season 1, but what I did see was smart, bittersweet, and ferociously funny. Expect more of the same.

Pen15 is an R-rated “traumedy” set in middle school as it really happened in the year 2000. Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine play versions of themselves as thirteen year old outcasts, surrounded by actual thirteen year olds. In this world, seventh grade never ends and the pains of growing up are inevitable.

  • Babyteeth (Sep. 18) – This drama took critics by storm but was swept out to see due to a limited release during the pandemic. Prime time to give it a shot now that it’s free on Hulu.

When seriously ill teenager Milla falls madly in love with smalltime drug dealer Moses, it’s her parents’ worst nightmare. But as Milla’s first brush with love brings her a new lust for life, things get messy and traditional morals go out the window.
