What’s New on Netflix: February 2019.

Fresh off of a big month and and 10 Oscar nominations, Netflix is looking to keep the momentum going strong.

If you like all of the original programming Netflix has been dishing out lately, February is going to be a treat for you.  New offerings that are creating buzz include Russian Dolls, The Umbrella Academy, and Velvet Buzzsaw.  We also see several mainstay series getting new seasons, such as Patriot Act with Hassan Minaj and the excellent Chef’s Table.

For fans of classic films, Netflix’ offerings may be a little slim this month.  Iconic series like Jaws and American Pie (without the awful spinoff movies, thankfully) join the library, and a few highly anticipated films are also making their way to the streaming service.  You can laugh your way through the cold of winter with hits such as The 40 Year Old Virgin and Hairspray, or indulge in guilty pleasures like Final Destination.  For artsy and indie films, 2016’s Personal Shopper was an excellent, under-the-radar drama that joins the Netflix library in February.

New and Notable Originals.

Dear Ex

A young boy tries to deal with the death of his father while his mother fights a contentious legal battle with her ex-husband’s lover over the life insurance payout.

A compelling dramedy from up and coming Taiwanese director Hsu Chih-Yen.

Velvet Buzzsaw

After an artists’ tragic death, several figures in the art world move to claim his stash of unreleased work, with sinister results.

This film reunites Director Dan Gilroy and stars Rene Russo and Jake Gyllenhaal, who last worked together on the critically lauded thriller Nightcrawler.

The Umbrella Academy

Eight siblings raised as superheroes are gathered together as adults when their father passes away.  As they deal with their conflicted feelings for him, they learn of a potentially apocalyptic event that will require all of them to work together.

This series is based on an Eisner winning comic series by Gerard Way, and has a strong cast with Ellen Paige and Mary J. Blige.
