What’s New on Netflix: May 2019.

Netflix opens May with a nice crop of classics, followed by a shower of original series.

Once again Netflix opts to open the month with classic films, this time leading with quite a nice variety.  Comedies include both Austin Powers films, Dumb and Dumber, and ZombieLand.  For film buffs, we get Scarface, Hoosiers, and Gosford Park, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas from Terry Gilliam.  There’s popcorn fare aplenty with the Matrix trilogy, Insidious, and Snowpeircer as well.

On to the originals, I can’t say that there’s a killer app in the pipe for May.  Many favorite series make a return, and fans of BoJack Horseman should be pleased by the new series Tuca & Bertie.  I don’t see a star power driven mega movie this month – unless you think Zac Efron playing notorious serial killer Ted Bundy is going to be big news.  I thought Netflix had gotten past stuffing their ranks with serial killer biopics?  Oh well.

Old habits die hard.

New and Notable.

    • Tuca & Bertie.  Irreverent animated series about two anthropomorphic bird besties.

    • Dead to Me.  A new dark comedy series with Christina Applegate.

    • Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.  People like Zac Efron.  People like serial killer biopics.  Easy peasy.

    • The Perfection.  A stylish and surreal thriller/horror about competing cellists.

    • When They See Us (Miniseries).  Ava Duvernay brings a  four part series about the Central Park Five – a group of black teens wrongly convicted of a heinous crime and their fight for justice.
