Ho Ho Ho. We’re back from hiatus and Christmas specials are back on Netflix in November.
Netflix is stringing up the Christmas lights the minute Halloween is over, with a lot of holiday specials featuring a lot of A-list talent. Even if yuletide cheer is not your specialty, Netflix has several interesting foreign originals, classic films, and the latest season of the award-winning drama, The Crown.
New and Notable
- Ludo (Nov. 12)
From a resurfaced sex tape to a rogue suitcase of money, four wildly different stories overlap at the whims of fate, chance and one eccentric criminal.
This dark crime comedy jumps all over the place, but looks to have the visual style and over-the-top bravado to back up the weird plots.
- Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (Nov. 13)
Decades after his trusted apprentice betrayed him, a once-joyful toymaker finds new hope when his kind and curious granddaughter comes into his life.
I have to pick one Christmas special (because most of this month’s originals are X-Mas themed) so I go with this well-cast (Forest Whitaker, Phylicia Rashad, Keegan-Michael Key) light-hearted musical.
- Hillbilly Elegy (Nov. 24)
An urgent phone call pulls a Yale Law student back to his Ohio hometown, where he reflects on three generations of family history and his own future.
This packed film (Amy Adams, Glenn Close, directed by Ron Howard) looks to be Netflix’s latest film sure to produce Oscar nominations.
