What’s New on Netflix: October 2019.

You’ll actually want popcorn in your Halloween goodies bag as Netflix loads up October with high-profile originals.

Netflix brings out the big guns for the fall season.  Many favorite series get fresh seasons this month:  Peaky Blinders, Carmen Sandiego, and Big Mouth are all back.  We’ve even got a television movie return for Breaking Bad!  Speaking of movies, it seems that Netflix is Oscar hunting once again.  Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman, and Antonio Banderas star in an original drama by Steven Soderberg, and Eddie Murphy continues his comeback tour with a biopic about blaxploitation legend Rudy Ray Moore – better known as Dolemite.  Up and down the list, original series and films roll out in October, making it hard to pick which new releases deserve the spotlight.

You had me at “hi-yah!”

Outside of originals, we’ve got an eclectic mix.  Lauded classics like Raging Bull and Trainspotting rub elbows with lighter fare such as The Bad Boys, Charlies Angels, and Flintstones franchises.  Towards the end of the  month, recent theater releases such as Echo in the Canyon and Free Fire make their way to streaming.  About the only deficiency I see is a lack of big name horror flicks in time for Halloween.  We get Scream 2 and Sinister 2, and the return of the horror anthology Creeped Out.  That’s about it.  I guess you can only trot out Freddy and Jason so many years in a row.

New and Notable.

    • In the Tall Grass (10/4):  Two siblings hear cries for help coming from the tall grass, but wind up needing help as a sinister power in the field traps them.  Adapted from Stephen King and Joe Hill’s novella.

    • El Camino:  A Breaking Bad Movie (10/11):  Jesse Pinkham (Aaron Paul) is on the run from the law and his past.  A continuation of the Breaking Bad series written and directed by the creator of the show.

    • The Laundromat (10/18):  A widow (Streep) gets caught in the bombshell Panama Papers when she investigates two lawyers (Oldman, Banderas).  From Steven Soderbergh.

    • Dolemite is My Name (10/25):  Eddie Murphy stars as Rudy Ray Moore, a pioneering rapper/comedian/blaxploitation film star who became a cultural legend playing the kung-fu fighting; inner city champion Dolemite.
