While not capitalizing on original content, Amazon still has a lot to offer members in the way of movies.

I wonder if critics liked it…

Amazon seems to be making up for quantity with quality when it comes to original/exclusive offerings.  This year it has brought us the Oscar nominated drama Manchester By the Sea and the criminally neglected indie film Paterson by director Jim Jarmusch.  Following those critical darlings, Amazon is adding The Salesman, a gripping drama from Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi which also won an Academy Award this year amidst controversy when the director boycotted the US travel ban.  Thanks for nothing, Trump.

Since Amazon is light on originals, we won’t be picking our favorites per se.  Instead we’ll just give you our take on what they have to offer in the way of movies and original series.

Amazon Prime July 2017.

Original/Exclusive Movies:

The Salesman (July 6)

A husband and wife are attempting to put on a stage production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman when tragedy strikes.  A home invasion results in the wife being assaulted.  As the husband becomes obsessed with revenge on her attacker, she must cope with post-traumatic stress.

This film took awards around the world, so there’s not much I can add to its accolades.  It is tightly paced, excellently acted, and intricately layered with detail and nuance.  Check it out.

Original Series:

Niko and the Sword of Light: Season 1 (July 21)

An eternal battle between light and dark is not going well for the good guys.  Every hero to challenge evil sorcerer has failed.  Desperate, they summon on last hero…who turns out to be a young boy.  The princess of light must teach him his destiny and guide him to become the champion of light before all is lost.

Fun and funny with a nice visual style.  It reminds me of other shows such as Steven Universe, Samurai Jack, and Adventure Time, while having its own flavor.  An intriguing offering for the young and young at heart from a new animation studio.

The Last Tycoon:  Season 1 (July 28)

Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s (The Great Gatsby) unfinished final work, this series tells the tale of a young Hollywood golden boy who is attempting to re-invigorate his father’s movie studio in a world ravaged by the Great Depression and menaced by the rise of fascism in Europe.

A solid cast brings to life a glittering world on the precipice of ruin. Lily Collins is really thriving in this web-original market!  Fitzgerald’s ability to bring this period to breath-taking life transfers well to the screen.  Amazon may finally have another great drama to pair with The Man in the High Castle.
