Amazon starts to pick up steam with four new series and two new original movies added to the roster.

So yeah, I’m picking a John Cena movie. Deal with it.

While it may not boast the output of Netflix for in-house content in October, Amazon continues to add high quality movies and shows, while leaning on its channel subscription deals to enhance its original content.  This month we have two new movies, one critically praised documentary about the war in Syria, and one dramatic film about soldiers in Iraq.  For those looking to add to their catalog of binge-worthy material, Prime has the highly anticipated third season of its comedy series, Red Oaks, as well as three new series.  Lore, from the producers of the X-Files and The Walking Dead, should scratch your creepy itch in time for Halloween.

Amazon Prime October 2017.

Original Films:

  • City of Ghosts (10/13)
  • The Wall  (10/20)

Our Pick:  Both.

I know it sounds like a cop-out, but I’ve been waiting for both of these projects for a couple of months.  City of Ghosts is timely, well made, and created by a group of self-made journalists who are trying to document the horrible atrocities going on in their homeland.  Like most documentaries, it has an agenda, but it is also the only source for inside the fog of war reporting coming out of Syria, making it invaluable for folks actively concerned about the situation there.

The Wall may be less important, but no less gripping.  A fictional account of two US soldiers pinned down in the dessert by enemy snipers, you get a tight dramatic thriller that uses small things to drive big tension.  While it does boast action, it looks to be more character driven as the two soldiers try to survive an increasingly desperate situation.

Original Series:

  • Inside Edge  (10/9)
  • Lore  (10/13)
  • Sigmund and the Sea Monsters  (10/13)
  • Red Oaks Season 3  (10/20)

Our Pick:  Lore.

Based on a popular podcast, this series examines the origins of the myths, monsters, and urban legends that haunt the popular imagination.  Blending live action dramatizations, stylish animation, historical photos, and welded together by interesting narration, Lore looks to be just the creep show you’re looking for when the witching hour rolls around.
