Prime members can look forward to one new original film and three series.  Oh, and NFL football!

What's New on VOD: Amazon Prime September 2017.Are you ready for some football?  Streaming services like Amazon and Hulu are betting on it!  This month we see Thursday Night Football simulcast on Prime, and Hulu has worked out a deal with Fox for their own stable of NFL programming.  One day of pigskin mania may not be enough for die-hards to cut the cord, but I’d imagine Time Warner and the like must be sweating bullets if others like the NBA or MLB start to jump on the bandwagon.

As for original programming, Amazon continues its somewhat sedate pace.  They apparently have opted to screen their original films in theaters instead of going straight to their platform like Netflix does, so films from Amazon tend to be of high quality but rather rare.  Fans of their hit series Transparent should be happy this month, as the long awaited 4th season premiers on the 22nd.

Amazon Prime September 2017

Original Movies.

  • The Lost City of Z (9/15)

Our Pick: The Lost City of Z (duh.)

Charlie Hunnam stars in a dramatization of the life of Percy Fawcett, a British Explorer who risked his career, his reputation, and the life of his crew (including his family) to prove his theory that the remnants of an advanced civilization awaits discovery deep in the Amazon rain forest.

This is one of those movies, like Silence, that is a litmus test for their stars.  Charlie Hunnam, Tom Holland, and Robert Pattinson are famous for much less heady fare, so they seem to be giving 110% here.  I thought it looked great when it came to theaters for a hot minute, but never got to check it out.  I’ll be sure not to miss it now that it’s included on Prime.

Original Series

  • One Mississippi Season 2 (9/8)
  • Transparent Season 4  (9/22)
  • Whishenpoof! Season 2 (9/26)

Our Pick:  Transparent.

Hard to pick against an Emmy and Golden Globe winning comedy.  For the few who haven’t seen it yet, the series is a dramatic comedy that follows the lives of the Pfeffermen family after the family scion, Mort, reveals to his adult children that he is transitioning genders.  I haven’t picked up this series yet, but it’s starting to get to a critical mass where a weekend binge may be in order.
