What’s New on VOD: VUDU August 2017

August is a good time for funny business on VUDU. So stock up on laughing gas and skip the local chuckle-hut, it’s time to check out the VOD offerings!

VUDU is going hard in the paint with stand-up comedy specials for their Movies On Us section this August. Which is awesome, because between Alien: Covenant and The Wall, their premium offerings, are tragic.

Alien Covenant
“A priest, a rabbi, and a xenomorph walk into a bar… stop me if you’ve heard this one before.”

No, VUDU, I refuse to catch them all!

After three months of checking VUDU out, I’m starting to notice their patterns. The first is their “pre-order X movie the week it hits theaters and get $8 off the ticket” promotions. The second is their “interested in X movie in theaters right now? Here are similar movies/prequels bundled together ON SALE!”. Lastly, they tend to knock $3 off if you pre-order their timed exclusives the week before they hit the site. All of this fits their M.O. to get you to own, not rent, their stuff.

That’s all fine and dandy if you are a collector. I’m not. As such, the site has started to lose it’s luster for me. The fact that app versions of VUDU on consoles (PS4, Xbox One) don’t even offer the Movies On Us option is also pissing me off. Still, they do tend to beat Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu to the punch on new releases, and sometimes that extends to their rental options as well as their purchase stuff. As such, they continue to be a relevant player in the streaming wars.

My Picks

Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures, VUDU August 2017
Math (and smashing the white male domination of STEM) made fun!

This movie is fantastic, and right now it is on sale to rent for 99 cents. Get your ass to a couch right now, because “Everyone needs to see this“.

Tim Minchin and the Heritage Orchestra live at the Royal Albert

Tim Minchin VUDU August 2017

Tim Minchin is rapidly becoming one of my favorite comedians. He’s a Renaissance man in all meanings of the term. He sings, plays piano, composes and directs, and is a scholar as well as one of the most delightful champions of skepticism and the scientific method currently out there. Come for the wit, stay for the knowledge bombs.
